About the Australian Shepard:
Each bolded word below is a reason for why the Australian Shepard is a popular breed and each paragraph below goes into further detail on that reason. This post also shows the history of the Australian Shepard breed.
Australian Shepards are a very popular dog breed because of their fur markings and eye color, size, and their intelligence.
Aussies are beautiful
Australian Shepards (Aussies) are well known for their beautiful fur markings. They are often bred with other types of dogs for their pretty markings. There are two known categories on how we describe an aussie’s fur marking. One of the categories would be merle colors and the other category would be tri-colors.
- Merle Colors
According to an Oh Tiny Heart blog post, the proper way to create a merle colored aussie is to breed a tri colored aussie and a merle colored aussie. When you breed a merle colored aussie and a tri-colored aussie there is a 50% chance that each individual puppy will be merle colored or tri colored. “Common sense tells breeders: if merle is a dominant color gene, why don’t we breed 2 merle colored dogs and increase our odds? Sure, that could work.” – Oh Tiny Heart blog post
But when you breed to merle dogs genetic defects are more common for the puppies. Breeding to merle dogs is called a double merle, it possess both dominant merle genes. “Double merle dogs; while it is a gene and not a color per se, are typically described as mostly white, with light, sometimes minimal merling patterns. Due to this lack of pigment, the dog is prone to hearing and sight issues.” – Oh Tiny Heart blog post
Aussies have a variety of different eye color combinations. For example one of Orlov’s eyes is blue and the other one is a very dark brown.
An Aussies size
Aussies come in miniature and standard sizes. Therefore they are great apartment dogs if trained well, and if they have a proper amount of exercise. If aussies do not get out their energy then they may knock over things and run around in the house.
They are focused and intelligent dogs
They take direction very well, and are very focused. They are energetic and therefore they can be great agility dogs. They love to run and jump.
According to AKC, “Although there are many theories about the origin of the Australian Shepherd, the breed as we know it today developed exclusively in the United States.” Aussies were bred as herding dogs. Since they were bred as herding dogs they need lots of exercise to minimize their energy levels. Therefore they are great agility dogs.
